Material Matters was a community textile project that involved different people choosing a textile that was precious to them and telling its story through a small wall hanging. Workshops took place at the Glasgow Women's Library, Pilmeny Development Project in Leith, Edinburgh and the International Women's Centre in Dundee in 2015/2016. The ten wall hangings were displayed at the Glasgow Women's Library and the Scottish Story Telling Centre in Edinburgh and the public were invited to bring along textiles of their own and tell their stories. People brought many different textiles and, behind them, lay stories of loss, kindness, courage and campaign: a wedding sari festooned with flowers, each sewn down on a hand worked Singer sewing machine; the cut out pieces of a girl's dress made by a mother with no time to sew them together; a small mat made by a Polish refugee who escaped to Britain with her children in a fifteen month trek across war torn Europe; a banner made by three artists to celebrate the centenary of the great Suffragette rally in Scotland and the first embroidery of a member of the Embroiderers' Guild, sewn with her grandmother when she was four years old, a tablecloth signed and sewn each Christmas by members of one family.
