Imprisonment in Lochleven Castle
Elizabeth 1, Queen of England
|
At Lochleven Castle Mary miscarried Bothwell’s child, possibly twins and was forced to abdicate. In May 1568 she escaped and raised an army but was defeated at the Battle of Langside. She fled to England and put herself under the protection of her cousin-queen Elizabeth I. Now a fugitive, she wrote to Elizabeth:
It is my earnest request that your Majesty will send for me as soon as possible, for my condition is pitiable, not to say for a Queen, but even for a simple gentlewoman. I have no other dress than that in which I escaped from the field. |
